Emiko Artemis is a South Australian based visual artist working across media. Emiko uses costumes and masking in her work to create immersive environments that question our place today’s fast paced world. She is interested in ideas of mysticism, story telling and ritual and often uses the natural world to create narrations of disorder and unease. Her work is informed by theories of phenomenology and exploring the liminal space of interior and exterior worlds is an ongoing motivation for her work. Emiko has post graduate studies in arts and theory and intersperses her visual arts practice with community arts work. Emiko has presented her work nationally and has participated in several seminars and interviews about her practice and research. Emiko is a proud and active member of both her disability arts and LGBTIQ communities.
Emiko Artemis graduated with a PhD in 2012. Prior to this she was awarded the University medal for her honors year and was selected to exhibit as a Hatched Graduate at PICA in her undergraduate year. Whilst a student she was also awarded an overseas study scholarship and an APA scholarship for postgraduate study. Since graduating Emiko has had several significant achievements. She has been selected as a finalist for the Josehine Ulrick photography award, the Musslebrooke art prize and was a category winner in the Manning Valley art prize. Before relocating to South Australia, Emiko was president of IAVA in NSW and was showcased in Wollongong regional gallery’s Local Current show. In 2020 she was selected as a grantee to attend Meeting Place, Arts Access Australia’s annual arts gathering. She has received a Sydney Myer fund National Assistance Program for the Arts grant and awarded a grant through Victor Harbor council’s arts and culture fund. In 2021 she was awarded a benevolence fund grant through NAVA and was artist in residence at Saubier House. Most recently Emiko was awarded first prize in the Waverly Woollahra Printmaking Prize. Her work has appeared publications including CODE magazine and Open Doors Collective. She has been profiled by the Illawarra times for her community arts work and was interviewed by Radio Adelaide for two recent solo exhibitions. Emiko has also been interviewed by Regional Arts Australia about her practice. Alongside her Visual arts practice, Emiko has also run a number of successful community arts projects. She has presented her work in seminars and online platforms as well as in traditional exhibition format. She is currently completing a Master of Design through the University of South Australia.
